In 1870 Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a British journalist living in New York, was assigned the task of finding Dr. David Livingstone.  Livingstone was a missionary of british descent and had disappeared into the Central African interior.  His expedition was funded by the NEW YORK HERALD.  In early 1870, he travelled to Zanzibar, on the eastern coast of Africa to begin his trek.
